being the face of christ to those in need
The History of Christian Service at St. John Vianney Parish
It was Sr. Theresa and Fr. Bill Easterling who encouraged the parish to get involved in outreach programs in 1986. Bob & Marge Kaiser were instrumental in getting the programs started. The Saint Vincent de Paul group began responding to the needs presented to them by Msgr. O’Callaghan. In 1992 the Food Pantry began distributing food to needy families every Saturday. The Scrip Program started at this time to fund the Food Pantry. SJV was one of the founding parishes of the Winter Shelter Program. In 1993 SJV began housing the homeless every winter. In 1995 the parish inherited a small house. It took many volunteers to make it ready for use as a transitional house. It has helped many families get on their feet and prosper.
Bob and Donna McKennon have been constant leaders in Christian Service from the beginning to the present. Many others have been involved over the years. The present Christian Service Board includes: the McKennons, Gloria Manglani, Eileen Bigalow, Deacon Richard Noon & wife Pat, Alex Mendoza, Irma Martz, Gill & Rena Dominguez, Geri Brehm, William Fice and coordinator Carol Lazarovits.
